Who is the companion who was thrown into the fire like our master Ibrahim?
Praise be to God, and may God's prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of God, his family, and his companions. As for what follows:
The one who did to him what he did to Abraham, peace be upon him, was one of the leaders of the Tabi'in, but he converted to Islam during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, without having met him. He was Abu Muslim Abdullah ibn Thaub al-Khawlani, the leader of the Tabi'in and an ascetic of the era. He converted to Islam during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and entered Medina during the caliphate of Abu Bakr.
He was from Yemen, where al-Aswad al-Ansi, a lying charlatan who claimed prophethood, had appeared. He sent for Abu Muslim, who lit a great fire and threw him into it, but it did not harm him. It was said to al-Aswad, "If you do not denounce this, those who followed you will be corrupted." So he ordered him to depart. He arrived in Medina, dismounted, and entered the mosque to pray. Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, saw him and stood up to him. He asked, "Who is this man?" He replied, "From Yemen." He asked, "What happened to the one whom the liar burned with fire?" He replied, "That was Abdullah ibn Thaub." The man asked, "I ask you by God, are you him?" He said, "Yes, by God." So Omar embraced him and wept, then led him until he sat him between himself and Abu Bakr, and said, "Praise be to God, who did not cause me to die until I saw in the nation of Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, someone who did to him what was done to Abraham, the friend of God." His prayers were answered and he worshipped a lot. He died in the land of the Romans fighting in the year 62 AH. From the Biographies of the Noble Scholars by Al-Hafiz Al-Dhahabi. This definition was also mentioned by Ibn Asakir in his history. And God knows best.
