The Antichrist (Al-Masih ad-Dajjal): The Greatest Trial Before the Day of Judgment
The Antichrist, known in Islamic tradition as Al-Masih ad-Dajjal, is considered one of the greatest trials that humanity will face before the Day of Judgment. Islamic teachings, especially the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, describe him as a major sign of the end times and a severe test of faith for believers. His appearance will mark a period of confusion, moral decline, and widespread deception, where truth and falsehood become difficult to distinguish for many people.
According to authentic narrations, the Dajjal is a human being, but he will be given extraordinary abilities as a form of divine trial. He will claim to be God, demanding that people worship him, and many will follow him due to the astonishing miracles he appears to perform. These “miracles” are not signs of divinity, but rather tests allowed by God to separate true believers from those who are easily deceived.
One of the most well-known physical descriptions of the Dajjal is that he is blind in one eye, while the other eye is distorted and defective. The Prophet ﷺ also stated that the word “kafir” (disbeliever) will be written between his eyes, and every true believer will be able to read it, regardless of their literacy. This sign will serve as a clear indication of his falsehood for those whose faith is strong.
The Dajjal will also possess the ability to influence natural events by God’s permission. He will command the sky to send rain and the earth to produce vegetation, causing wealth and resources to appear to those who follow him. Those who reject him may face hardship, poverty, or famine. Because of this, many people will be tempted to accept his claims in order to survive or gain material benefit. This makes his trial one of the most dangerous in human history, as it combines deception with physical temptation.
He will travel across the earth rapidly, spreading corruption and testing people’s faith. However, he will be unable to enter the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, as they will be protected by angels. The Prophet ﷺ warned Muslims to seek protection from his trial in their daily prayers and to recite the opening verses of Surah Al-Kahf, which provide spiritual protection and strengthen faith against deception.
The emergence of the Dajjal will take place in a time of great turmoil, when moral values are weakened and ignorance spreads. He will exploit human fear, desire, and weakness, presenting himself as a solution to crises while leading people away from the truth. This is why Islamic teachings emphasize awareness, knowledge, and strong belief as the best protection against his deception.
Eventually, according to Islamic belief, the return of Jesus Christ (Isa, peace be upon him) will mark the end of the Dajjal’s reign of deception. Jesus will descend to Earth, unite the believers, and confront the Dajjal. The Dajjal will ultimately be killed, and truth will prevail over falsehood. After this event, justice and peace will spread across the world, and humanity will experience a period of guidance and stability.
The story of the Dajjal is not only a narration about the future, but also a moral lesson for all generations. It teaches that faith must be firm and not based solely on appearances or material success. People are reminded that extraordinary events are not proof of truth, and that deception can appear powerful and convincing. True safety lies in sincere belief, knowledge, and trust in God.
In conclusion, the Antichrist represents the greatest test of faith in Islamic eschatology. His story warns humanity about the dangers of deception, materialism, and blind following. It encourages believers to remain steadfast, seek knowledge, and strengthen their spiritual connection with God. No matter how powerful falsehood may appear, truth ultimately prevails.
